Breaking the Cube

July 5, 2008

In the history of our world, there exists a cube that holds a great secret. That whoever learn and wield that secret, will attain fame, glory and a powerful mind. But after years of hibernating, the secret of the cube has spread all through out the nations. Will its power weaken too?

Sorry, this has nothing to do with good and bad robots attacking our planet for a cubic junk that hides in Hoover Dam. This is about a cube that is simmilar but less harmless. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you.. the Rubik’s Cube…

Rubik’s Cube is a mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the “Magic Cube” by its inventor, this puzzle was renamed “Rubik’s Cube” by Ideal Toys in 1980 and also won the 1980 German Game of the Year (Spiel des Jahres) special award for Best Puzzle. It is said to be the world’s best-selling toy, with over 300,000,000 Rubik’s Cubes and imitations sold worldwide.

In a typical Cube, each face is covered by nine stickers of one of six solid colours. When the puzzle is solved, each face of the Cube is a solid colour. The Cube celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2005, when a special edition Cube in a presentation box was released, featuring a sticker in the centre of the reflective face (which replaced the white face) with a “Rubik’s Cube 1980-2005″ logo.

The puzzle comes in four widely available versions: the 2×2×2 (Pocket Cube, also Mini Cube, Junior Cube, or Ice Cube), the 3×3×3 standard cube, the 4×4×4 (Rubik’s Revenge), and the 5×5×5 (Professor’s Cube). Larger sizes of the cubes, 6×6x6 and 7×7x7, are also available

About the cube, for me it may be the most difficul and maybe most enjoying puzzle in my lifetime. Since I was a child, I dreamed of someday solving it. But these past few semesters in our school, the code of the cube seemed to have been broken. Many students seem to know the secret and wherever you go, there will be someone who can solve it. So if you know how to solve it, that fact isn’t something new anymore, no more fame, glory or anything. So as the secret spread, so will the power too. Right? And since many people share that ability, the greatness and awesome factor will also decrease.

As for my dream of solving it, I just did yesterday. After 18 years of endeavor, iI finally figured it out, ith the help of a friend of course… And it was so hard… not just the cube but swallowing my pride just to ask some questions about it. But after all that, it feels so damn good…

Next stop, the 4X4X4!
